Zana Christian High School, SPG 2022 Project Update
At the beginning of April 2022, several schools participating in the School Gardening Project SPG 2022 started planting their vegetables seeds or transplanting their seedlings.
Today, at YoFFA we started receiving success stories from Agriculture teachers at several school programs. Over the course of this year, we shall share the project impact stories from schools as they come in.
Our first story comes from Zana Christian High School in Wakiso district. The school has a YoFFA chapter with 120 students, and they planted and look after egg plants, cabbage, kale/Sukuma and tomatoes in their urban farming establishment. According to Mr Kabali Edward, the Ag teacher at Zana Christian, students at his school are engaged in practical class-based gardening activities that are carried out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by students in senior 1 and senior 2 (7th & 8th grade).
Edward mentions that his school project is supporting the implementation of the new lower secondary school curriculum by giving students an opportunity to learn agriculture practically, and interesting them in pursuing careers in agriculture and farming. Through this project, our students have been able to grow vegetables they have never grown before, manage vegetable seedlings in the nursery, take care of plants, sale their vegetables and collaborate on various grounds while undertaking project activities. We thank the project coordination team for choosing our school to be part of this program, Edward added.
This one Ag teacher program is advised by Mr. Kabali Edward who is assisted by several our educators at Zana Christian. Vegetable produce at this school is sold and income received saved for future chapter activities. The school which is one of the produce buyers uses the produced vegetables to supplement their school meals.
The School Gardening Project at Zana Christian and other 92 schools is supported by Victoria Seeds (U) Limited, Holistic eLearning Platform and implemented by the Youth Future Farmers of Africa (YoFFA) organization.
